Lee Sanchez

The championship was played on a municipal course named for a golfer who never saw it. Marty Sanchez won the first tournament he entered at eight years old, a Sun Country PGA junior event at Santa Fe Country Club, and died in the spring of 1992. Three days later, Santa Fe Mayor Sam Pick told the Sanchez family that the city would build a golf course and put Marty’s name on it. It opened in 1998.

His brother, Lee Sanchez Jr., played in the field this weekend. He made an eagle at the 18th and spoke afterward with Andrea Peraza, SCAGA’s USGA P.J. Boatwright Jr. intern.

Asked to walk through the eagle at the 18th, Lee Sanchez Jr. said:

“Well you know I was pretty lucky, I did feel the presence of my brother Marty when I hit the shot and it went in the hole so I definitely knew it was him looking down upon me when I got up there and knew that the ball had gone in the hole for a two, so that was really special.”
